Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP)

The OESP will provide an ongoing rate reduction directly on the bills of eligible low-income Ontario consumers

QUICK FACTS:

  • The OESP will provide an ongoing rate reduction directly on the bills of eligible low-income Ontario consumers starting January 1, 2016. The fixed monthly credit will be based on household income and household size, which will provide a greater benefit to low-income customers who are more in need of assistance.
  • Additionally, Ontarians who rely on electric heating or certain medical devices are eligible for a top-up.
  • While the benefit is not applied retroactively, there is no date by which customers must submit applications. Regardless of when a customer applies for the program, eligibility will be two years for most customers, or five years for applicants who are 65 or older or who receive a CPP disability pension. Applicants will need to re-apply to the program every two or five years.
  • There is comprehensive OESP ad buy, done by the OEB, consisting of print, radio and bus shelter advertisements.
  • Buck slips were also included in all ODSP and Ontario Works cheques, and the OEB is requiring LDCs to send out bill inserts in all electricity bills and to include a link to the online application portal on their websites.
  • We are partnering with social service agencies, food banks, libraries, MPP offices, the Ontario Native Welfare Administrators Association, legal aid offices and senior living centres to ensure that eligible Ontarians are aware of this program.
